GBP/JPY explained: why traders call it "the beast"
GBP/JPY has a nickname for a reason. It takes the pound's jumpiness and the yen's sudden scares and puts them in one chart.
At a glance
| GBP/JPY | |
|---|---|
| What it is | How many Japanese yen one British pound buys (nickname: "the beast", sometimes "the dragon") |
| Pip size | 0.01 |
| One pip is worth | ¥1,000 per standard lot. In US dollars it depends on USD/JPY |
| Busiest hours (ET) | London, about 3 am – noon; Tokyo, 7 pm – 4 am, is quieter |
| What moves it most | The Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, risk mood, UK news |
| Trading hours | Sunday ~5 pm ET to Friday 5 pm ET |
Pip math, as an example. One pip is ¥1,000 per standard lot, about $6.67 if USD/JPY were at 150. A math example, not a forecast. Use the pip value calculator at today's rate.
What moves it
- The Bank of England. 8 meetings a year, decisions usually at 7 am ET. UK CPI at about 2 am ET.
- The Bank of Japan. 8 meetings a year, results usually in the US late evening. Its slow move away from rock-bottom rates since 2024 keeps yen traders alert.
- The rate gap. UK rates have been far higher than Japan's. In calm markets, traders borrow yen to hold pounds, which can lift the pair slowly.
- Risk mood. In a scare, those trades unwind and the yen jumps. GBP/JPY can fall hard and fast, as it did in the yen surge of August 2024.
- UK politics and anything that hits the pound alone.
- Japan stepping in to support the yen, as it did in 2022 and 2024.
When it's busiest
The big moves usually come in London hours, from about 3 am ET, and the overlap with New York, 8 am to noon ET. Tokyo hours are active but often smaller. After noon ET it tends to slow.
Japan keeps the same clock all year, and the UK and US change on different weekends. In March, October and early November, check the market hours tool before trusting a schedule.
Its personality
- Wide daily ranges. Often among the biggest of the major crosses. A normal day's move here can be double that of EUR/USD.
- Fast, deep pullbacks. Even in a clean trend, it can swing back a long way before carrying on.
- News on three clocks. UK data, Japanese data and US data all touch it.
Same 1%, smaller size. A wider stop doesn't mean more risk. If your stop has to be twice as far away, your size is half as big, and the money at risk stays the same. Our guide on how much to risk per trade walks through it.
Reading it with our method
- Daily chart first. The bigger picture matters even more on a pair this jumpy. Mark the last places price turned around.
- Trade only with that direction. Counter-trend trades here can get run over.
- Body close only. GBP/JPY loves long tails through levels. Wait for a body.
- Size from the stop, every time. Set the stop beyond the turning point, then let the lot size calculator give you the size.
Common mistakes
- Using the same lot size as on EUR/USD. The stop needs more room, so the size needs to be smaller.
- Tight stops to "keep it small". A stop inside normal wiggle tends to get hit by noise. Shrink the size instead.
- Chasing a spike. After a big candle, price often swings back. Let the next candles show you.
- Stacking yen trades across GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY and USD/JPY: mostly one bet on the yen.
Questions
Why is GBP/JPY so volatile?
It pairs the pound, which reacts strongly to UK news, with the yen, which can surge in a market scare. Two lively currencies make for wide swings.
Why is GBP/JPY called the beast?
Traders gave it the nickname for its big, fast moves. It's informal, not an official name.
Is GBP/JPY good for beginners?
It can be studied like any chart, but its swings make sizing mistakes costly. Many beginners practise on calmer pairs first, or trade it at a small size.
How much is a pip on GBP/JPY?
¥1,000 per standard lot. In dollars that's ¥1,000 divided by the USD/JPY price.
