What is price action trading?
In one line: Price action means reading the chart itself, the candles, turning points and levels, to make decisions, with few or no indicators on top.
A simple example
Picture a chart with no lines added. Just candles.
Price rises to 120, turns down to 112, rises to 126, then turns down to 117. Each high is higher than the last. Each low is higher too. That's an uptrend, read straight from the chart.
Now price drops and a candle body closes below 117, the last low. That's the first sign the uptrend may be changing. No indicator told you. The candles did.
That's price action: reading what price did, where it turned, and where it closed.
What price action traders look at
- Turning points: the last places price turned around.
- The direction: higher highs and higher lows, or the reverse. See higher highs and higher lows.
- Levels: Support and Resistance where price reacted before.
- Candle closes: did the body close past a level, or did only the Wick poke through?
Why it matters
Every indicator is built from price. Price action reads the source directly, with no delay from averaging.
It also keeps a chart clean. Fewer lines means fewer mixed signals. If you want help marking turning points, the free StructureX chart tool on TradingView does that automatically.
A common mistake
Treating every candle shape as a signal. A hammer or engulfing candle in the middle of nowhere means little. Location matters more than shape. A pattern at a clear level, in the direction of the bigger trend, is worth noticing. The same shape anywhere else is mostly noise.
Price action isn't a pattern list. It's three questions: where did price turn, which way is it going, and where did it close?

Questions
Is price action better than indicators?
Neither wins every time. Price action reads the chart directly; indicators summarise it. Many traders use price action first and one indicator as a second opinion.
Can beginners learn price action?
Yes. Start with one idea, like marking the last turning points, and practice it on past charts before anything else.
Does price action work in every market?
Candles and turning points look the same on stocks, forex, crypto and futures, so the reading works everywhere. Each market still has its own habits.
